Eggelsberg, Austria: Bernecker + Rainer Industrie-Elektronik GmbH (B&R) will be acquired by Swedish robotics and automation multinational company ABB.
Founded in 1979, B&R is a provider of product- and software-based, open-architecture solutions for machine and factory automation. Based in Eggelsberg, Austria, the company employs more than 3,000 people, including about 1,000 application as well as research and development engineers. It operates across 70 countries, growing with a revenue compound annual growth rate of 11 percent over the last two decades. It generated sales of more than US$600 million (2015/16) in the US$20 billion machine and factory automation market segment.
With the acquisition, ABB intends to expand its industrial automation offerings by integrating B&R’s products in PLC, industrial PCs and servo motion as well as its software and solution suite. The company will join ABB’s Industrial Automation division as a new global business unit called Machine And Factory Automation, headed by the current managing director, Hans Wimmer. The co-founders of B&R, Erwin Bernecker and Josef Rainer, will act as advisors during the integration phase to ensure continuity.
