EMO Hannover 2019: Global Machine Tool Community Paving The Way For Industry 4.0

70 companies from ten countries have connected 110 machines and 28 value-added services at EMO Hannover 2019 via the umati standard interface. “umati is opening up a new chapter in production,” says Dr. Heinz-Jürgen Prokop, Chairman of the VDW (Verein Deutscher Werkzeugmaschinenhersteller – German Machine Tool Builders’ Association), at the umati press conference on 16 September 2019 in Hanover.

“The interface enables machine tool manufacturers to fulfill another Industry 4.0 promise: the simple, fast and secure exchange of data,” continues Prokop. Creating a connection and providing a uniform language for machines, systems and software are essential prerequisites for reaping the benefits of digitalisation in production. The fact that individual companies no longer have to concern themselves with the correct functioning of the network interconnection represents a tremendous step forward.

International acceptance

umati has also already made a strong impression internationally. Three international consortia from major machine tool manufacturing countries have joined the interface: ProdNet from Switzerland, Edgecross from Japan and NCLink from China. In addition, the machine tool associations from China, the United Kingdom, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Spain and Taiwan as well as the European machine tool association Cecimo are supporting the project.

“Choosing the OPC UA standard as a basis for the development of the interface supports international dissemination. It ensures that umati can be used free of charge worldwide,” explains Prokop. 90 companies are contributing to the standardisation work in the Joint Working Group together with the OPC Foundation. The release of Version 1.0 of the Companion Specification, the next milestone, is planned for the middle of next year.

EMO showcase demonstrating the effectiveness of umati

The showcase at EMO Hannover 2019 demonstrates that the interface is already up and running. Each machine has an OPC UA server which sends the data to a data hub which has been set up especially for the trade fair. There, the software value-added services can access the data via OPC UA clients and show what added value can be generated from the resulting data. How the data is coming together can be experienced via a live dashboard at the umati central information booth (E24) in Hall 9.

Whether or not umati is successful will ultimately depend on how customers rate the added value of the interface. For their part, manufacturers must provide this added value in a dependable manner. “For this we need reliable partners who can provide the necessary components such as control architecture and software components. We will achieve this through close cooperation with the control manufacturers and, in future, no doubt also with extensive parts of the supply chain,” says VDW Chairman Prokop.

But until then, the umati working group still has much to do. Version 1.0 will be the starting signal for launching actual products. “In the future, the umati brand should represent a promise: anyone who buys a umati machine and has umati interface software should be able to get the data flowing with no difficulty,” says Prokop.

In order to achieve similarly extensive distribution to that of the USB connector in the consumer goods sector, the VDW is working – in addition to the Companion Specifications – on establishing a binding specification for the configuration of communication parameters, defining minimum requirements for implementation, and developing standardised test procedures to assess performance. Further aims include extending the brand’s global reach, defining binding conditions for its use and setting up a viable organisational structure. “Version 2.0 is already on the horizon because there are many aspects which have not yet been tackled, such as production order management on the machines, or tool management,” concludes the VDW Chairman.

heimatec GmbH is presenting a wide range of innovative solutions and new products at EMO Hannover 2019. An INNOVATION AREA will show driven and static tools with the polygonal tool interface “pti” as well as the latest version of the digital tool management system heimatec.Sensoric. Also on display are new products such as the heimatec.Cradle, tools with the Capto quick-change system, and the heimatec.SwissTooling product family. heimatec will be exhibiting at Hall 5 Booth D34.

heimatec’s EMO exhibition booth offers a lot of space for different thematic worlds. It features an INNOVATION AREA where visitors can see what stage of development two new products are in. As a member of the extended expert group of the pti-working group, heimatec presents several tool holders and driven tool units with the new conical-polygonal lathing interface pti.

Digital tool management is finding ever greater areas of application for driven tools. For a long time, heimatec has been developing a system solution under the product group name heimatec.Sensoric for the acquisition and monitoring of various tool parameters such as rotation, temperature, vibration and battery condition. heimatec is presenting the latest version of this Industry 4.0 solution in its INNOVATION AREA.

Meanwhile, the latest innovation heimatec.Cradle, a revolutionary tool system for high-precision machining of bearing seats in pump housings, will be presented for the first time. The housing of the Cradle tool unit is precisely adapted to the geometry of the pump housing, achieving maximum rigidity in the machining process. A specific interface for milling tools also ensures the best possible machining results.

Specially developed for Swiss type lathes, heimatec.SwissTooling presents a comprehensive range of tools that includes both static tool holders and driven tool units. The range is characterised by a long service life and the highest processing quality.

heimatec has extended its product range with heimatec.Capto, a modular quick-change tool system that significantly increases set-up and changeover efficiency. heimatec.Capto is extremely flexible and offers wide modularity and a high availability of interchangeable inserts for lathes and machining centres. The heimatec.Capto quick-change tooling system is available for Capto sizes C3, C4, C5, C6, C8 and C10.

GEFERTEC At EMO: New-Generation Machines And Applications For 3D Metal Printing

Two years ago, GEFERTEC presented the additive 3DMP process at the EMO for the first time. Meanwhile, this innovative 3D metal printing technology has become established as a new industry standard. The process is based on proven arc welding technology using wire as a source material. 3DMP is more cost efficient and faster than powder-based 3D printing – and wire for most standard raw materials is available at a much lower price. At this year’s EMO, GEFERTEC will be presenting a number of applications developed in cooperation with industry partners for different customers. Hall 9, Stand K03 is where the company will be showcasing examples from the aerospace, rail, natural gas and petroleum, toolmaking, and mining industries.

An arc405 made by EMAG will be used for a live metal printing demonstration at the trade show. Metal components measuring up to 0.06 m3 with a maximum mass of 200 kg can be produced on the 5-axis machine. The arc405 is the first result of a joint venture between GEFERTEC and the EMAG GROUP. As a minority shareholder, EMAG will be responsible in the future for mass production of the 3DMP machinery. This will enable GEFERTEC to meet growing market demands and ensure shorter delivery times.

EMAG will also be at the trade show (Hall 17, Stand C29) to demonstrate the wide range of applications using 3DMP manufactured components. The subsequent processing of printed components in the EMAG world will also be shown.

Creaform To Showcase 3D Scanning Innovations For Metalworking Industry At EMO Hannover 2019

Creaform will be exhibiting its entire line-up of ergonomic 3D scanning solutions and scanning software for product development, manufacturing, testing, and automated quality control at EMO Hannover 2019, the world’s premier trade fair for the metalworking industry.
