What Will Move Us Next?: IAA Mobility 2021 Highlights

With 2021 coming to a close and some countries slowly easing restrictions within their country, the post-pandemic world has certainly been enlightened to how mobility affects us significantly.

Mobility can be labelled as an umbrella term that encapsulates a wide range of functions either as enabling mobility or in itself mobility. Especially in our digital world, the possibility is simply limitless from our standard automobiles to digital solutions and urban air mobility. With the global vision of an all-electric future, the organisers of IAA Mobility 2021, have brought together a phenomenal trade show that has been a trending topic among trade leaders, international corporations and fans of the latest automotive innovations. 

400,000 participants from 95 countries – 744 exhibitors and 936 speakers from 32 countries – 67 percent of visitors under the age of 40 – international media reach of 137 billion – survey shows very positive exhibitor and visitor response. All these statistics makes it further evident that the premiere of IAA Mobility 2021 in Munich, from the 7th to 12th September, was a roaring success and is now the largest mobility event in the world.

“We took a courageous step and were rewarded by the visitors,” said Hildegard Müller, President of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), which organized the first IAA Mobility this year jointly with Messe München.

“What will move us next?” is the motto of this year’s show with three key pillars being mobility of the future, commitment to constant change, and a platform for all those shaping the future. Among the massive list of exhibits, some were well-known OEMs such as Renault, Hyundai, Ford, BMW, MINI, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Porsche, Volkswagen, Huawei, Microsoft, IBM, Bosch, Magna, Schaeffler, Continental, Michelin, and the bicycle brands Canyon, Specialized, Riese & Müller, Rose, Kettler and many more.

“We are now evaluating the event and will further develop our strategy so that we can welcome an even broader spectrum of exhibitors at the next IAA MOBILITY, and to continue the dialog on the future of mobility.,” Hildegard Müller said. 

Regardless of the event format in Munich, the IAA Mobility will continue operating its website www.iaa.de, making it a worldwide digital platform for the transformation of mobility on the path to climate neutrality, for innovations around cars, bikes, scooters, car and ride sharing, digitization and urban development.

China To Develop World’s First Exascale Computer

CHINA: According to the latest supercomputing reports, China is set to build the world’s first exascale computer by as early as 2019, which is is defined as one that is capable of conducting one billion billion calculations per second. Making it 10 times faster than the current world’s fastest computer, the Sunway Taihulight, and capable of the same calculation power as the world’s top 500 super computers combined. An Hong, a professor of computer science at the University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei and a member of the advisory committee on high performance computer development in the central government, has stated that this exascale computer will be utilised for China’s maritime expansion and narrow the maritime power gap between China and the US by providing the most thorough analysis of marine-related data sets. It can also be utilised for high-end equipment manufacturing, oil exploration and car collision simulation. Thus, allowing for China to possess a greater stance over international affairs due to an increased knowledge over manufacturing systems, ocean simulations, weather forecasts and climate change. In turn, this has spurred the US government to commissioned six companies including IBM, Intel and Hewlett Packard Enterprise to derive counter intelligence solutions against China’s lead on high performance computing and hopes to establish its own exascale computer by 2021. Currently, China not only hosts Sunway and Tianhe, which are the first and second ranking supercomputers on international performance charts, but also overtook the US in 2017 in terms of installed supercomputing capacity. An event that Horst Simon, deputy director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California has termed as an “inflection point”.

Siemens Closes Mendix Acquisition, Extending Industry Leading Digital Innovation Platform

Siemens has closed the acquisition of Mendix yesterday, eight weeks after the transaction was announced as part of the company’s Vision 2020+ strategy.

As enterprises invest to digitalise their operations, demand for business applications is growing significantly faster than the capacity of IT organisations to deliver them. This gap between business’ demand for smart applications and the lack of adequate developer talent has created unprecedented demand for low-code, high productivity platforms. With the addition of Mendix, Siemens enters the rapidly growing low-code application development market and will invest in Mendix to build on its market-leading position, across both its existing customer verticals and the Siemens customer base.

“Siemens will continue to invest in Mendix’s independent go-to-market operations, product roadmap, brand and developer community, building on our legacy as the most innovative and open low-code cloud platform,” said Derek Roos, co-founder and CEO of Mendix. “Our platform will remain industry and ecosystem agnostic. We will build on our industry-first partnerships with SAP and IBM, and we’re going to bring even more differentiated software solutions to market by combining Siemens’ deep vertical know-how with the Mendix platform.”
