Walter AG Presents New Grades For ISO K And ISO H Materials

With the WBK20 and WBK30 CBN grades, Walter is launching two new indexable inserts for turning ISO H and ISO K materials: WBK20 (grain size diameter 3.0 μm) for finishing cast iron; WBK30 (grain size diameter 10.0 μm) for high metal removal rates in ISO H and when finishing with a heavily interrupted cut. Both CBN grades are made from a substrate with a high CBN content and are also suitable for roughing and finishing sintered steel.

The WBK20 indexable inserts are “tipped”. The “CBN tip” is applied to the corners of the insert with high tensile strength by means of vacuum soldering. The WBK30 grade is made from a solid CBN substrate and allows for higher cutting speeds and therefore a higher productivity in cast iron than indexable inserts made from carbide.

In addition to the high-precision manufacturing, a strong microgeometry on the cutting edge also contributes to the high quality, productivity and process reliability of the turning insert. This microgeometry is always matched to the respective application. Walter offers the new WBK20 and WBK30 CBN grades in all of the most popular ISO sizes and radii and thereby completes its extensive CBN turning range. These grades are particularly beneficial for users from the automotive industry, general mechanical engineering and the energy industry.

On The Safe Side When Drilling

Walter Tools is completing its D4120 product range. With dimensions of 2, 3, 4 and 5 × D, the Tübingen-based company offers a wide range spanning diameters from 13.5 to 59 mm. Specially developed outer and centre inserts ensure precise balancing of the cutting forces. To this end, centre inserts slightly larger than the outer indexable inserts were selected and equipped with a corner protection chamfer. Besides greater process reliability, this plays a crucial part in increased precision and minimal drilling noise. Walter offers a version with wiper edge for high surface finish quality. The drilling body features two coolant-through channels and a measuring collar (Dc) for easy drill identification, even when assembled. Polished flutes and a hardened surface optimise chip evacuation and wear resistance.

The combination of D4120 and four-edged indexable inserts offers users cost-efficiency advantages and the greatest possible flexibility thanks to a coordinated system. This is of interest to users, both in the case of difficult machining operations, such as cross holes, chain drilling and inclined inlets and exits, and because these drills can be used in ISO materials P, K, M, N and S. Users in general mechanical engineering, mould and die making, and the energy and automotive industries could therefore benefit from outstanding precision in the hole diameter, a high degree of process reliability and cost-efficiency. Alongside the standard dimensions, Walter also offers the D4120 in special dimensions via Walter Xpress with faster delivery times.

Tungaloy DuoJust-Cut’s New JXPS Insert Boosts Productivity In Parting Operations

Tungaloy is expanding DuoJust-Cut line of indexable parting tools to include JXPS inserts that features a pressed-in 3D chipbreaker for reliable chip control in during parting operations on Swiss-type lathes.

DuoJust-Cut features innovative insert clamping ensuring tool rigidity and stability in various parting operations. In addition to existing JXPG insert with a ground in chipbreaker on the rake face, the new JXPS insert incorporates a 3D chipbreaker pressed in to its “dual-rake” cutting edge which is designed to promote optimal chip control and evacuation without compromising surface integrity.

Four different types of DuoJust-Cut inserts fit in the same pocket of the tool holder, allowing an optimal insert cutting depth to be selected for a given application. An optional parting holder is also available when machining close to the sub-spindle is required.

For the high requirements in the automotive sector in particular, Walter AG is introducing new boring tools with tangentially arranged indexable inserts. The usually high feeds for tangential systems are therefore transferred from the milling to the holemaking. In contrast to radial tools, tangential tools can work without good chip clearance.

Walter combines the extremely stable tool core that results from this with a separate indexable-insert geometry – and therefore not only improves the surface quality: A second clearance angle reduces the effective clearance angle, which is otherwise high for tangential tools, and reduces “chattering”. The square-shaped indexable insert can be installed at any angle. At 72° and 90°, a face chamfer (wiper) also works. This also guides the tool and keeps it quiet. Boring conditions of 4 × Dc can therefore be achieved. Even small diameters (from 24 mm) can be machined with three teeth (z3).

The objective of combining roughing and finishing in a single roughing/finishing machining process is achieved in many cases thanks to the tangential boring tools. Multiple steps and high feeds shorten the machining time here. Other arguments put forward by Walter in favour of the concept include high precision thanks to stability as well as the cost-effectiveness of the indexable inserts with 4 plus 4 cutting edges. A wide range of inserts make the special tools particularly advantageous for users who manufacture components made of cast iron, chrome-nickel materials or steel and aluminium, such as turbine or gearbox housings, gears, cylinder bores and steering knuckles. This is especially the case if they want large machining allowances of 2 to 7 mm.

MAPAL’s radical ISO indexable inserts have been developed with the idea of withstanding specialised applications including huge stock removals, unstable conditions or as disc milling cutters. Positive and negative indexable inserts have also been built from four different PVD cutting materials and possess novel carbide substrates and coatings. Making them highly adapted for incorporation into milling cutters. The inserts also possess an increased tool life and allow for smooth running of machinery with minimal noise pollution. This can be attributed to ability of the inserts to be adjusted accurately to the requirements mandated by the materials and applications involved. For example, the most economical version of the insert contains eight and 16 cutting edges that can be utilised for face milling and between two, four and eight cutting edges for shoulder milling.
